Plato Data Analyzer Professional Edition is a client-server application and therefore requires a little forethought before a configuration is decided on. The following information details installation of the client-server components to a single computer or to multiple computers (one where the server components are installed to a server computer and the client programs are installed to a user's workstation). If there will be more than one PDAProfessional client or it is decided that the database files should reside on a computer other than the PDAProfessional Client, the recommendation is to dedicate a server computer for hosting the database engine and files.

PDAProfessional does not need an application server, but if dictated by your organizational policies, we can install server files on a server other than the server where SQL Server is hosted. Our most typical installs host the server files and SQL server on the same server.

Server Requirements

  • Hardware: We do not recommend sharing the server with other applications as if one is running a resource intensive task it may slow other application and vice-versa. It will also be very difficult if we share our server with another vendor as it may cause support / upgrade / rights and other related issues.
  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows. Certain version of SQL Server can be installed on specific operating system. Please refer to Microsoft documentation for other OS requirements for SQL Server.
  • SQL Server: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 / SQL Server 2008 with its own instance. We cannot share our SQL Server instance with any other product.
  • Net Framework: Some of the server components require, Microsoft's .NET framework. We recommend installing .NET redistributable version 1.1 or better.
  • Hard Disk space: Refer to SQL Server documentation for its hard disk requirements. Additional hard drive space is required to accommodate the creation of topics, review templates, and worksheets. There is no hard formula for calculating this, as review template size varies. A very rough estimate might be for every 10,000 worksheets against 10 review templates having an average of 50 criterion, allow for one 1GB of space.
  • Worksheet Transaction Size: There is no hard formula for calculating this, as review templates size varies. A very rough estimate for one worksheet having an average of 50 criterion and 4 criterion fields, transaction size will be 100 KB.
  • Virtual Server: The server components can be hosted in a Microsoft Virtual Server and VMware Virtual Server.
  • Guidelines: The following chart should help determine the server requirements for your organization. Note these are recommendations; you can mix-n-match from different columns for your own needs.

Licensing Models

PDAProfessional supports two licensing models:

  • Device-based: In this model physical workstations are licensed. Thus, if you have installed PDAProfessional on a single workstation and purchased one workstation license, you can have any number of users accessing it. On the contrary, if you have purchased one license and then install it on two workstations for the same user, access to the second workstation will be denied. This applies to installations under 'Citrix' or 'Terminal Server' environment also, where each individual Citrix / Terminal Server client will count as one workstation. Running two instances of PDA Professional from a single workstation under the same / different users uses up only one license in this model.
  • Concurrent User: In this model concurrent (active) users are licensed. Thus if you have purchased one concurrent user license, you can install PDA Professional on as many workstations as you desire, but only one user will be able to access it any given point of time. As soon as that user logs-off, another user can log on from another workstation. Running two instances of PDA Professional from a single workstation under the same user uses up two licenses in this model.

In each of the models you can create a many users logins as you need and are not restricted by the number of licenses purchased.
