Installing PDAPalm involves installing the Palm Desktop Software and PDAPalm Conduit on the desktop computer, and the PDAPalm application on the designated Palm Pilots. It is necessary that a valid licensed copy of the Plato Data Analyzer be installed on the target computer before installing PDAPalm.

Installing and configuring PDAPalm for use is a 4 step process:

  1. Install the Palm Desktop software, and appropriate updates (provided on the CD that came with the Palm Pilot)
  2. Install the PDAPalm Conduit software
  3. Configure HotSync to install the PDAPalm application to the Palm Pilots
  4. Configure the PDAPalm Conduit

Prerequisite

  • Ensure that you have local administrative or equivalent rights to install software to the computer.

Step by Step

Installing the Palm Desktop Software:

  • Insert the Palm Desktop Software that came with your handheld and run the setup program.
  • Follow all on screen and reboot instructions as they are displayed. It is recommended that the default installation options be used. It is also recommended that the following guidelines be observed:
    • When asked for a username for the Palm Pilot, enter PDA User
    • Accept the default installation directory C:\Palm
    • Do NOT configure the software for use with Mail

Installing PDAPalm:

The following steps will install one PDAPalm application to one Palm Pilot only. The details of installing the PDAPalm application to additional Palm Pilots follow under the section Installing additonal PDAPalm

  1. If you haven't done so already, insert the PDAPalm Installation CD or disk into the appropriate drive.
  2. Choose RUN from the Start Menu
  3. When the RUN dialog box appears, type: [CD drive letter]:\PDAPalm\SETUP.EXE
  4. At the Welcome To PDAPalm Setup screen, click Next.
  5. At the Customer Information screen, enter your user name and company. It is recommended that you install the product for all users. Click Next to continue.
  6. At the Destination Folder screen, type in a new location or accept the default. Click Next to continue.
  7. At the Select Features Screen, select the version of PDAPalm to install. Click Next to continue.
  8. At the Start Copying Files, verify that Current Settings reflects the setup options that you specified. If not, click Back to change any setup options. If you are satisfied with the current settings, click Next to begin copying the files to your computer.
  9. After the files have been copied to your computer, the conduit will be registered by the setup program. Wait until you see a message stating that this has taken place. Click Ok when prompted to do so.
  10. After installation, an Icon for PDAPalm Standard and/or PDAPalm Professional will be installed on to the Windows desktop. Double click this icon. It will launch the Palm Application Installer. Click Done. This will install the PDAPalm Application to the handheld during the next sync operation.

Configure the PDAPalm Standard Conduit:

After successfully installing PDAPalm, you must first configure the PDAPalm Standard conduit before conducting the first HotSync.

  • Locate the HotSync icon located on the system tray of your Windows desktop. Right-click your mouse on this icon and choose Custom.

Ensure that the user name in the drop down list is set to "PDA User". Highlight the entry PDAPalm Standard, and then click Change.... You will then be presented with the PDAPalm Standard Configuration dialog.

  • Set the desired parameters. Choose the appropriate System Directory from the PDA System dropdown list. Click OK when finished, then click Done to return to the Windows desktop.
  • It is recommended that the Palm Desktop Application Sync Options for other Palm Applications on the handheld be set to Do Nothing if they will not be used. This will speed up the Hot Sync process. For example, to do this for Mail:
    • Locate the HotSync icon located on the system tray of your Windows desktop. Right-click your mouse on this icon and choose Custom.
    • Choose Mail, then click Change.
    • Choose Do Nothing, then check the Set As Default option. Click OK when done.
    • Repeat this process for Expense, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes.
  • When ready, insert the Palm device in the cradle and press the HotSync button. Watch the desktop monitor for the displayed HotSync progress. If the HotSync process is successful, the HotSync Progress Screen will simply disappear when it is finished. If the PDAPalm portion of the HotSync encountered problems, you will see a message stating that PDAPalm generated one or more messages. Click OK to view this log. See the section on PDAPalm Sync Logs for an explanation of the entries in this log.

Configure the PDAPalm Professional Conduit:

After successfully installing PDAPalm, you must first configure the PDAPalm Standard conduit before conducting the first HotSync. Note: It will have been necessary to create a Plato Data Analyzer Professional Role that has already been assigned Review Templates and various other attributes appropriate to Palm Pilot use. Please see the Plato Data Analyzer Professional product documentation on creating roles.

  • Locate the HotSync icon located on the system tray of your Windows desktop. Right-click your mouse on this icon and choose Custom.
  • Ensure that the user name in the drop down list is set to "PDA User". Highlight the entry PDAPalm Standard, and then click Change.... You will then be presented with the PDAPalm Professional Configuration dialog.
  • Type in the database server name and then click the button with the server icon to the immediate right. When the connection to the server has been made, the Role combo box will be populate with a list of Plato Data Analyzer Professional roles. Choose the role that will be downloaded to the Palm Pilot. Set the other desired parameters. Click OK when finished, then click Done to return to the Windows desktop.
  • It is recommended that the Palm Desktop Application Sync Options for other Palm Applications on the handheld be set to Do Nothing if they will not be used. This will speed up the Hot Sync process. For example, to do this for Mail.
    • Locate the HotSync icon located on the system tray of your Windows desktop. Right-click your mouse on this icon and choose Custom.
    • Choose Mail, then click Change.
    • Choose Do Nothing, then check the Set As Default option. Click OK when done.
    • Repeat this process for Expense, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes.
  • When ready, insert the Palm device in the cradle and press the HotSync button. Watch the desktop monitor for the displayed HotSync progress. Installing the PDAPalm application to additional Palm Pilots:

For Palm Pilots that do not have the PDAPalm application installed, it will be necessary to HotSync them twice. Once to install the PDAPalm application, the second time to download the System and Study databases selected for use by the PDAPalm application.

To instruct Palm Desktop to install PDAPalm to a Palm Pilot, run the Install PDAPalm App utility located under the PDAPalm program group of your Windows desktop, or double click the Install PDAPalm App shortcut that was installed on your Windows desktop. Ensure that the user name in the drop down list is set to "PDA User" (unless the default name was changed). The next HotSync for this handheld will install PDAPalm. This must be repeated for each Palm Pilot.
